Vicki Hanson Best Technical Paper Award

Vicki L. Hanson died Jan. 20, 2026, after a serious illness. She was a strong advocate for diversity and accessibility and had a lasting impact on the establishment of the W4A conference. In honour of Prof. Hanson’s memory and in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the field of accessibility and her support for the W4A conference, the steering committee decided to name the Best Technical Paper Award as the “Vicki L. Hanson Best Technical Paper Award”, sponsored by Intuit. From this year onwards, this award will help us remember her importance to our community.

We will miss you greatly, Vicki. Rest in peace!

Generative AI and Language Models for Accessibility

This year’s W4A conference theme is “Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Language Models for Accessibility”. It is impressive to see that generative AI and language models are taking us by storm. They are adopted and used at incredible speed for different purposes. We also see that many researchers are exploring how they can be used for the web in a broader sense, and specifically for accessibility. They have significant potential for accessibility and automation, as the web is an incredible data resource for the models to learn from. Generative AI can be used to create new text, image and other multi-model types of content. Language models, both large language models (LLMs) and small language models (SLMs), can be used to understand language. They have significant advancements in many different fields, including education and research. However, they can also be a threat to accessibility, inclusion and ethics. This year, with this theme, we would like to explore the benefits as well as the limitations and dangers of generative AI and language models for accessibility. Therefore, we ask the following questions: How can we use generative AI and language models for web accessibility? Are generative AI and language models accessible to all people? Will they substitute web accessibility experts? How do generative AI and language models support the development of innovative, smart assistive technologies? What are the ethical risks associated with generative AI and language models? How can we ensure that they do not exclude disabled users? How can we ensure that the content generated is inclusive? Can AI systems overcome accessibility barriers dynamically via brute force? While we encourage authors to contribute to the conference on any of the traditional topics covered at W4A, this year we seek to provide an answer to these and other related questions by particularly welcoming submissions that address web-related challenges and/or solutions associated with the following areas:

  • Accessibility of Generative AI, LLMs and SLMs
  • Generative AI for Web Accessibility
  • LLMs for Web Accessibility
  • SLMs for Web Accessibility
  • Generative AI and Language Models for Accessible Design and Development
  • Generative AI and Language Models for Assistive Technologies
  • Inclusion Support for Generative AI and Language Models
  • AI Ethics
  • AI for Good
  • AI-supported Accessible Communication

But as in every year, do not be deterred by the theme; all topics related to web accessibility are welcome, as are papers dealing with wider aspects of digital accessibility and universal access.
